
Sam Francis
(San Mateo, California, 1923 - 1994)
[t.a.]Born in San Mateo, Calif., a city south of San Francisco, in 1923, Francis is part of the University of Berkeley, California, first choose a major in botany, then in psychology and medicine.
In 1993 the artist has generously donated to MOCA ten paintings created between 1951 and 1992. His relationship with the Museum began as a founding member of the board of which was a part until 1989.
Moreover, as a member of the Committee for the construction of the new MOCA building, brought to the attention of the council's work Arata Isozaki.
Works by Sam Francis are in the collections of museums around the world: The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, The Museum of Modern Art, Shiga (Japan ), Tate Gallery in London. Several murals have been commissioned in Tokyo, Basel, Berlin, New York and San Francisco.
