
[t.a.]Born in Fumel, France, in 1945, Jean Nouvel, architect and town planner, he was trained first in Bordeaux and then at l'École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where in 1971 he obtained the Diplome par le Gouvernement. After a first experience of working in the studio of Claude Parent in 1970 opened his first practice with François Seigneur. In 1988 he founded the Jean Nouvel, Emmanuel Cattani et Associés (till 1994). It was co-founder of the Movement French architects (1976) and the Syndicat de l'Architecture (1979), he founded and directed the Biennale of Architecture in the Paris Biennale (1980), was vice president of the Institut Français d'Architecture (1991). Since 1983 he has received numerous awards and national and international awards including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale (2000), the Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2001) and the Praemium Imperiale (2001). Among his major works include the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris 1981-87), the renewal of the Lyon (1986-93), the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art (Paris 1991-94), the Galeries Lafayette in Berlin (1991-96), the cultural center of Lucerne (1993-2001).
