Basket "PCH02" design Pierre Charpin, 2011
I have always felt a deep interest in the design of existing objects. It might seem like a modest task, but in reality redesigning and updating, objects whose typology is well-known and whose methods of use have been firmly established for a long time is something so essential as to respond to the need to reclaim the world that already exists, of which we are inevitably the heirs. The new items I have designed for Alessi fall into this category. While stainless steel baskets have been part of Alessi's repertoire for a long time, jack knives have been missing. This happens to be a "multipurpose" object, a sort of companion-object whose evocative power is able to stir various memories and images in us. The basket, on the other hand, whose use is so evident , is an essential part of our domestic landscape, a presence that reminds us of an ancient, pre-industrial past. It is one of the great archetypes and its "re-design" is never an easy exercise. I have striven to design objects that could be gently integrated into an already densely-populated landscape comprising the Alessi catalogue. Simple in their essentialness and familiarity, the design of these objects is almost "classic". (Pierre Charpin"
